Why You Can’t Miss This Year’s Festival of Postgraduate Research

Hey there, fellow PhD researchers! Are you ready to dive into a day filled with interdisciplinary inspiration, networking, and maybe lots of fun and joy as well? I’m Yvette, a third-year PhD student in Applied Linguistics. I was one of the organisers of last year’s festival and I’m excited to see the festival launched again. I’m here to share why this year’s Festival of Postgraduate Research is an event you simply can’t afford to miss!

Ever wondered what other PhD researchers are up to in other corners of Warwick? Felt frustrated wanting to chat with people outside your usual circle but not knowing where to find them? Or maybe you’ve wanted to break out of your work routine and explore diverse aspects of PhD life but didn’t know where to start. Isn’t it strange realising you’ve been at Warwick for years and still haven’t had a chat with folks from neighbouring departments you occasionally bump into?

Imagine a day where you can address these curiosities, immerse yourself in rich conversations and learn about research happening across the university, connect with fellow PhD researchers, and gain fresh insights that could revolutionise your own work. That’s precisely what’s in store for you at the Festival of Postgraduate Research at Warwick. Trust me, it’s an experience like no other.

First up, this year’s festival will include interactive talks on topics that are sure to resonate with every PhD researcher. Whether you’re grappling with challenges during your PhD journey or seeking unknown unexpected opportunities, these talks are designed to offer practical advice, heartfelt encouragement, and a powerful dose of inspiration. Get ready to walk away feeling empowered and reinvigorated!

But that’s just the beginning – more inspiration awaits at the Research Showcase. This includes 3-minute talks by current Warwick PhD students on a wide range of topics, from sustainable transport to art brut.

The Showcase also includes a display of research projects, each one offering a glimpse into a different fascinating academic world you could never even imagine. Some of the highlights from last year’s Research-Out-of-the-Box were a film of performative art, a giant colourful web of birth trauma and intersectionality, and tasty blue protein bakery cakes. Fun, creative, unconventional.

This year promises equally impressive displays, offering you the chance to explore new ideas, peek into research life in other disciplines, and connect with researchers from diverse backgrounds.

And let’s not forget the best part – coming together as a community to enjoy some delicious food and drink! There’s something special about bonding with fellow researchers over shared interests and a tasty treat or two. So, whether you’re engaging in lively discussions about your latest breakthrough or simply enjoying the camaraderie of your peers, you’re sure to have a blast at our festival.

But perhaps the most magical aspect of the festival is the sense of connection and camaraderie that permeates every interaction. As PhD researchers, we often find ourselves immersed in our own little worlds, focused solely on our research projects. But at the festival, barriers dissolve, and boundaries blur as we come together to celebrate the incredible diversity of research happening at Warwick and beyond.

So, why should you clear your schedule and mark your calendar for this year’s Festival of Postgraduate Research? Because it’s more than just an event – it’s an opportunity to expand your horizons, connect with fellow researchers, and gain fresh perspectives that could shape the trajectory of your own work. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this incredible opportunity to dive into discovery. Register to reserve your place, if you haven’t already. See you there!
